Best Low Sulphite Wines Available in the UK
Low-sulphite and low-intervention wines are becoming increasingly popular with drinkers seeking wines made with fewer additives and less manipulation. These wines place greater emphasis on healthy grapes, natural fruit expression and minimal interference during fermentation and maturation.
However, “low sulphite”, “no added sulphites” and “low intervention” do not necessarily mean the same thing. Sulphites occur naturally during fermentation, so even a wine produced without added sulphur may still contain a small natural amount.
We examined the best-selling products in Organica Food & Wine’s collection of low-intervention and low-sulphite wines. The resulting selection includes Italian Sangiovese, Spanish Tempranillo, French Côtes du Rhône, Moldovan Saperavi and a mixed low-sulphite wine case.

1. Château Gigognan Côtes du Rhône Low Intervention
Best sulphur-free French red wine

Price: £19.99
Region: Rhône Valley, France
Grapes: Grenache Noir and Syrah
Vintage: 2022
Alcohol: 14.5% ABV
Credentials: Organic, biodynamic and award-winning
Sulphite position: Produced in the absence of sulphur
Taste: Raspberry, blackcurrant and red berries
Best with: Cold meats and tapas
Current status: Out of stock
Château Gigognan Côtes du Rhône is a low-intervention French red produced from Grenache Noir and Syrah. The grapes are harvested at night and selected in pristine condition, helping the winery reduce the need for corrective additions during production.
The absence of sulphur and short ageing period allow the wine’s fruit to remain prominent. It has a bright garnet appearance with aromas of raspberry, blackcurrant and mixed red berries. The palate is direct, dense and generously fruity, supported by crisp youthful tannins.
This is a robust wine that can be served at approximately 18°C with charcuterie or tapas. Serving it slightly cooler, at around 12°C, can soften its tannins and make it suitable as a substantial red aperitif.
Château Gigognan has organic and biodynamic credentials and received a Gold Medal at the 2021 Feminalise World Wine Competition.
Why we chose it: It combines low-intervention winemaking with organic and biodynamic production, Rhône character and an international wine award.

2. Essentia Sangiovese IGT Rubicone
Best no-added-sulphite Italian wine

Price: £16.99
Region: Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Grape: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2020
Alcohol: 13% ABV
Credentials: Vegan and biodynamic
Sulphite position: Produced without added sulphites
Taste: Fresh red fruit with a dry finish
Best with: Pasta, fresh cheese and red meat
Essentia Sangiovese IGT Rubicone is one of the clearest choices for shoppers specifically seeking wine produced without added sulphites. It is made from Sangiovese grapes grown in the Predappio area of Emilia-Romagna.
The grapes undergo thermovinification, a technique in which crushed grapes are heated to improve colour extraction. This produces an appealing ruby-red wine with a fresh, pleasantly fruity character.
Young tannins contribute a dry and slightly bitter finish, giving the wine sufficient structure for food. It is particularly well suited to tagliatelle al ragù, tomato-based pasta, fresh Italian cheeses or rare beef.
Serving the wine at approximately 14–16°C should help retain its freshness and red-fruit character.
Why we chose it: Essentia is explicitly produced without added sulphites and offers a food-friendly expression of Italian Sangiovese.

5. Other World Dóldora
Best low-intervention wine for adventurous drinkers

Price: £14.95
Region: Valul lui Traian, Moldova
Grape: Saperavi
Vintage: 2025
Alcohol: 14% ABV
Credentials: Vegan and minimal intervention
Taste: Ripe cherry, red and black fruit, clove and pepper
Best with: Olives and simply roasted vegetables
Other World Dóldora is an expressive minimal-intervention red from southern Moldova. It is made entirely from Saperavi, an ancient Georgian grape recognised for producing deeply coloured, characterful wine.
Its name translates approximately as “full to the brim”, which suits the wine’s generous ripe-cherry character. Red and black fruit aromas are accompanied by subtle clove and pepper.
The palate is medium-bodied, with smooth tannins, lively acidity and a clean finish. Although it has an alcohol level of 14%, its freshness allows it to be served lightly chilled.
It can be enjoyed without food or paired with olives, roasted peppers, aubergine and simply prepared vegetable dishes.
Important: The product is described as minimal intervention, but its listing does not specify an exact sulphite level or explicitly state that no sulphites were added.
Why we chose it: Dóldora offers UK drinkers an opportunity to explore low-intervention Saperavi from one of Europe’s oldest winemaking regions.

Which Is the Best Low-Sulphite Wine?
Essentia Sangiovese IGT Rubicone is our leading choice for drinkers who specifically want a wine produced without added sulphites. It combines fresh red fruit, dry tannins and a food-friendly Italian style.
Parra Jiménez Tempranillo Organic offers the strongest value. At £10.49, it is organic, vegan, biodynamic and described as having no added sulphur.
Château Gigognan Côtes du Rhône is the premium French option and has the additional distinction of organic and biodynamic production and an international gold medal. However, it was out of stock when this comparison was prepared.
Other World Dóldora is the most adventurous choice, particularly for drinkers interested in minimal-intervention wine made from less familiar grape varieties.
What Is Low-Sulphite Wine?
Low-sulphite wine is wine made with a lower concentration of sulphites than is commonly found in conventional wine. Sulphur dioxide is normally used during winemaking to protect wine against oxidation and unwanted microbial activity.
Reducing added sulphites can allow the fruit and fermentation character to appear more directly. However, producing a stable low-sulphite wine requires healthy grapes, careful hygiene and close attention throughout fermentation, maturation and bottling.
It is important to understand that “no added sulphites” does not necessarily mean completely sulphite-free. Small quantities of sulphites develop naturally during fermentation.
Is Low-Intervention Wine Always Low in Sulphites?
Not necessarily. Low-intervention winemaking generally involves minimising additives, manipulation, filtration and other corrective processes. Many low-intervention producers use little or no added sulphur, but there is no universal definition requiring them to do so.
Consumers who need precise information should check the bottle label, published technical information or contact the retailer before purchasing. This is especially important for anyone with a diagnosed sulphite allergy or sensitivity.
