Diuron suspension to continue
Survey to improve environmental and financial performance in the wine industry

1.      Diuron suspension to continue

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) have extended the suspension of diuron for certain registered products until 30 November 2012.

This announcement continues an initial suspension announced on 28 November 2011.  Instructions for the use of suspended products, the same as those issued earlier, will be re-issued.

Diuron is used to control broadleaf and grass weeds in agriculture, and weeds and algae in and around water bodies. The suspension also prohibited use in a range of situations such as irrigation channels and drains in agricultural and industrial situations.

The APVMA will finalise its review of diuron after receiving a final environmental assessment report from the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities.

Full details about the diuron suspension and review are available at www.apvma.gov.au.

2.      How are you responding to pressures to be environmentally “friendly” while still maintaining profitability?

Customers and governments are increasingly putting pressure on organisations to improve their environmental practices, and customers are showing an increasing tendency to choose products and services that are seen to be ‘environmentally friendly’.

Monash University is undertaking a study aimed at understanding the responses that Australian wineries and vineyards are making to these pressures with the main outcome of the research will be to identify which are the best environmental practices in order to improve both financial and environmental performance in the wine industry.

The study involves a short, online survey.  Participants receive an entry into a draw for one of five Apple iPods.  Participants will also be able to access a free summary of the results of the study via email, on request.

Please note that survey responses should be received no later than Monday 9 April 2012.
